Reach One -- Chatfield to Columbine
Flood Control Alternative: Natural Type Channel with Erosion Protection
and Floodplain Management
Recreation Alternative: Regional Park Reserve.

A major, regional park resource is currently under development in the form
of South Platte Park (Littleton Floodplain Park). Much of the park should
be developed for passive uses, such as wildlife observation, hiking and
nature study. Two focal points (visitor center and historical marker) with
more active uses are planned. The major spine trail should be constructed
on the river's east side, but numerous nature trails throughout the balance
of the park also need to be provided.

The two boating obstructions within Chatfield State Recreation Area are not
to be improved due to rest ri ct ions by the Corps of Engi neers . Both fi sh
and wildlife habitat can be enhanced by selecti ve rock placement in the
channel and native plantings throughout the park. Access by car should be
provided to the visitors center within the park. It is recommended that
the local sponsor work with the state to provide a safe and convenient auto
access and parking area where the same currently exists on an informal
basis along C-470.

Wetlands should be created and enhanced within the park wherever there is
adequate water and level land. The excellent wildl ife habitat which
currently exi sts in the area shoul d be preserved and enhanced by 1 eavi ng
downed trees and wildlife snags in place, installing artificial nesting
areas as appropriate, and providing wildlife observation facilities for the
public throughout the park.

Tributary trail connections are recommended at or near Dutch Creek and Dad
Cl ark Gul ch . All of the 1 and for the pa rk has a 1 ready been acqui red, and
it is open to the public for primarily passive use at the present time.
