II 1-9

OPERATION ANO MAINTENANCE
For the benefit of recreationsists and bicycle commuters using the river
corridor and its tributary connections, as well as to preserve maximum
flood carrying capacity in the channel, on-going maintenance of the
improvements should be a high priority in each jurisdiction. Routine
maintenance which should be carried out on a regular basis includes keeping
the channel free of trash and debris, mowing the riverbanks (particularly
the area adjacent to the trail system), litter pickup, weekly trail
sweeping, weed control and general upkeep of the river improvements. In
many jurisdictions. this work would be accomplished by the local parks and
public works agencies or under contract to a private organization.

AUTO ACCESS POINT CHARACTER SKETCH

In Denver, the Greenway Foundation has found it necessary and desirable to
suppl ement the city's mai ntenance efforts with a "Trail Ranger" program.
Duri ng the summer months when use is the hi ghest, the rangers regul arly
patrol the system to provide assistance to trail users while routinely
picking up litter, sweeping glass and dirt off the trail in particular
spots as needed, and generally keeping up the improvements such as by
repairing handrail. This very successful program can serve as a model for
other jurisdictions finding supplementary maintenance necessary.

LANDSCAPING

Non-i rri gated: Thi s type of 1 andscape approach ut il i zes nat i ve grasses,

trees and shrubs. Turf areas should be species that are drought tolerant

such as Buffa 1 ograss. Bl ue Grama. Si de-Oats Grama and Li tt 1 e Bl ue Stem.

Trees well adapted to the river environment include Cottonwood, Willow,
Russ i an 01 i ve, Green Ash and Hawthorn. The use of nat i ve pl ant materi al s

along the river is encouraged.

JJ:
t:

----

Irrigated: This type of landscaping should be utilized for active park
areas and i rri gated with an underground automati c system. Typi cally the
turf grasses are a bluegrass seed mixture. Trees and shrubs should be the
more ornamental nursery grown varieties that are adapted to irrigated turf
conditions.

VIEWS
Existing good views from the river to the mountains and the city should be
preserved and enhanced. Objectionable views can be screened by vegetation.
fencing and/or zoning ordinances. Views to the river from the banks often
require selective thinning of the vegetation to maximize sight lines.

'--.'3

~ -~-- ...----.-
~..~ ---- ~ ---
TRAIL RAN<ER MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

.'-->-
-----
