CWCB Flood Documentation Meeting Summary

Met with: Larry Tunnell, NWS, Denver, Colorado
Date: April 6, 1998

Markus Ritsch and Bill Owen from Riverside Technology, inc. met with Larry Tunnell on April 6,
1998 from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 1 :30 p.m. We met with Larry to discuss what precipitation
and meteorological data is available for the period May through October of 1997.

All radar data has been transfered from the NWS office in Denver to the National Climatic Data
Center in Ashville, NC (704)271-4800. Larry has only three storm events available as storm total
precipitation images from the radar data. These storms include the Sterling storm in Logan County,
the WeJdona storm in Morgan County, and the Fort Collins storm in Larimer/Weld County. The
radar data for these storms was ground-truthed with point gauge data and rainfall bucket surveys. If
the CWCB wants additional storm total precipitation estimates from radar they will have to be
processed by the NCDS. The one caveat in doing this is that the storm events will not be ground
truthed with rainfall bucket data. Markus will inquire with the NCDC regarding the cost to do this.

Bill Owen and Markus Ritsch spent most of the day going through the daily storm records. This
information is only available in hardcopy format at the NWS office in Denver. It is organized by
date for the counties in the Denver area of forecast responsibility. Of the 13 Counties declared
disaster areas by the President, the Denver office is responsible for Larimer, Weld, Morgan, Logan,
Phillips, Clear Creek, Elbert, and Lincoln Counties. The Pueblo office will have this information for
the southern counties, and the Grand Junction office will have this information for La Plata and
Routt Counties. Pertinent information (flood watches, flood warnings, short term forcasts, spotter
reports, advisories, sever weather reports, etc.) was copied from the Denver, NWS archives for the
following dates: June 13, 14, 15; July 27, 28, 29, 30, 31; and August 1,2,3,4,5,6,1997. Copies of
this material will be available in the technical addendnm.
