City streets and utilities were washed out or clogged
with debris: the interstate freeway was blocked and severely damaged; seg-
ments of the main railroad line were washed out; and several industrial and
governmental establishments were heavily damaged or destroyed. There were
370 residences and 59 businesses damaged, touching 417 Pueblo Co. families."

This flood in 1965 produced a peak flow of 47,000 cfs on the Fountain Creek.
The lOO-year flood is estimated at 64,000 cfs. The proposed Corps of En-
gineers' project would provide protection of at least 85,000 cfs.

This project is essential to prevent the recurrence of serious flooding in
Pueblo; and it will also provide for recreational facilities, bike and hiking
trails, bridle paths, playgrounds and wildlife areas in the floodplain.

The program has broad public support. Not only have the State of Colorado,
the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the City of Pueblo, the Pueblo Board
of County Commissioners, and a number of other political entities indicated
their strong support for the project--but other groups and local citizens
are anxiously awaiting the implementation of the project.

If we can provide any additional information to your staff, please feel free
to have them contact me at (303)544-3392 or D.R.
