steering committees.
Priority One: Involve the Business Community, At the outset, the Partnership
decided to fully involve the business community in all aspects of its activities, The
premise is that the knowledge and tools are available to help reduce business losses
from hurricanes, flooding, and other natural hazards, The challenge is to encour-
age businesses to adopt and routinely incorporate mitigation and preparedness
measures into their business plans and budgets, The Partnership is making impor-
tant in-roads, as reflected by the active participation of more than 30 businesses,

A number of mitigation, preparedness, and recovery measures have been under-

taken in the past two years, including:

. Education and awareness programs, which have been expanded to include
projects to strengthen and protect businesses and homes from storm damage
and flooding. Activities include installation of hurricane straps and hurricane
shutters, tree maintenance to reduce utility damage from fallen trees, genera~
tor safety programs to minimize fires and carbon monoxide exposure, and a
hurricane preparedness expo that drew more than 6,000 local residents.

. Business continuity and employee preparedness plans, which have been
developed and implemented in several New Hanover County businesses.
Through the Partnership, workshops are conducted and information is ex~
changed,

. Installation of emetgency generators in many facilities, including city and
county fire stations, to provide auxiliary power during and after disasters.

. Dune stabilization and beach nourishment programs to minimize flood
damage in the beach communities.

. Elevation of new homes and electrical equipment to reduce the potential for
flood damage,
