<br />Wilmington, New Hanover County's Approach to Hazard Mitigation
<br />New Hanover, a small coastal county in the southeastern
<br />corner of the state, boasts a growing economy, The
<br />area is supported by an expanding tourism
<br />industry and a population that is expected
<br />to grow from 120,284 in 1990 (U,S,
<br />Census) to nearly 180,000 by the year
<br />2010, Many new residents will be retirees who may not be aware of
<br />the natural hazards risks in the area,
<br />
<br />
<br />New Hanover's coastal location has put the county and its four incorporated
<br />municipalities (Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach, and Carolina Beach) in
<br />the path of numerous hurricanes, including Bertha (1996), Fran (1996), and Bonnie
<br />(1998), New Hanover's vulnerability to hurricanes and other natural hazards,
<br />coupled with the county's proactive approach to hazard management, were among
<br />the factors that FEMA considered when it designated Wilmington,New Hanover a
<br />Project Impact community To build on this momentum, the state selected the area
<br />as a HMPI Demonstration Community,

<br />In an effort to include broad public participation in mitigation programs and
<br />activities, the Wilmington-New Hanover Project Impact Partnership established four
