Heavy rains, in the area located north of Shelby, <br />caused failure of two small stock dams and extensive flooding of a <br />large part of Shelby. Two other small dams in the same area were <br />overtoppeGl:, but did not fail.. . Sullivan Dam, the larger: of the two dams <br />that: failed, was lost..and the other dAm known as Dam Number 3 was <br />extensivelyeroded'soas:to make it ineffective for storage purposes. <br />Flood waters damaged 135 homes and 8 businesses for. total estimated <br />damages in excess of $72,000. Municipal and utility damagee sustained <br />were eetimated at nearly '$34 ,000, primarily to the water well field <br />which is on the le1't bank of the Marias River, about 7 milee south of <br />the city.
