No stream gauging stations exist

within the Basin and thus a record of peak discharges which have occurred

within the drainage areas is unavailable. Little detailed information

on past flood events for these developed drainageways is available.

LOCATION: From 8th Tee looking across
Dutch Creek
Town of Columbine, Colorado

Floods on the South Platte River have occurred throughout the history

of the Drainage Basin. The earliest recorded flood was in 1844. The

recorded peak flood discharges for the major floods and the year of

flooding are tabulated in Table I for the South Platte River.

TIME: Spring, 1969

TABLE I

HISTORICAL FLOOD DISCHARGES
SOUTH PLATTE RIVER AT DENVER

LOCATION:

From Fairway Lane looking
south across Dutch Creek
to 10th Green
Town of Columbine, Colorado

Year

Discharge (ds)
13,000
8,790
22,000
12,320
10,200
40,300
17,600

1912
1921
1933
1935
1942
1965
1973

TIME:

Spring, 1973

These floods have been generated by intense rainfall over the tributary

basins. Even though no recorded information is available for the tri-

butary streams under study, the following pictures depict the seriousness

of the flooding which occurred to the Town of Columbine during the Spring

of 1969 and the Spring of 1973 from Dutch Creek.

TIME:

Spring, 1973

LOCATION:

From 13th Tee looking north
towards the South Platte
River and Dutch Creek
Town of Columbine, Colorado

FLOODING ON DUTCH CREEK
WITHIN COLUMBINE VALLEY

5
