2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.1 Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated area of the City
of Brush, Morgan County, Colorado. The area of study is shown on
the Vicinity Map (Figure 1).

The flooding in the City of Brush is from Beaver Creek, which was
studied in detail. Other sources of possible flooding in Brush
include the Brush Lateral Canal and Badger Creek overflows. Both
of these flood sources were inspected and evaluated to ascertain
the extent and possibility of diverting floodwaters into the city.
T~e study contractor's final conclusion regarding Badger Creek and
Brush Lateral Canal was that neither will flood the city of Brush.

The area studied in detail was chosen with consideration given to
all forecasted development and proposed construction until 1981.

2.2 Community Description

The City of Brush is located in Morgan County, in northeast Colorado,
approximately 90 miles northeast of Denver. The only adjacent
areas are the unincorporated areas of Morgan County. The normal
annual precipitation in the Beaver Creek and Brush area is approxi-
mately 13 inches per year. Included as part of the precipitation
is snowfall of 26 inches per year. The mean annual temperature in
the area is 48.90F.

Vegetation in the area consists of farmland crops in the lower
reaches and prairie grasses in the upper reaches. The predominant
soils in the basin consist of sand and sandy loam soils and, to a
lesser extent, silt and clay loam. The topography adjoining Beaver
Creek is very flat to the westl which includes the area of Brush,
but quite steep to the east.

The Burlington Northern Railroad, directly east of town, and County
Road DLD, 0.5 mile south of town, significantly affect floodflows
within the flood plain. In addition to the road and railroad
crossings within the flood plain, the City of Brush is located in
the flood plain area. The road and railroad embankments, as well
as the buildings and streets in town, serve as obstructions to the
orderly passage of floodflows through this portion of Beaver Creek.
Through the study areal the main channel is small, inadequate, and
restricted by the natural vegetation, thus limiting the effective-
ness of the channel.

2.3 principal Flood Problems

The history of flooding on Beaver Creek in and around the City of
Brush is vague and incomplete. Available records indicate major
flood events occurred in 1935, 1955, and 1965.

2
