Human Subject in Flume, P.N. - 14. <br /> <br />Equation 5 is applied where a subject 62 inches (1.57 <br />m) tall and weighing 105 Ibs would have a weight times <br />height product of 6510. The product number at <br />instability is computed by inserting 6510 into Equation <br />5 for the weight x height parameter. The subject will <br />become unstable at a product number of approximately <br />11,7. It is important to note that the relationship pre- <br />sented in Equation 5 and' portrayed in Figure 6 is inde- <br />pendent of the bed surface condition. A comparison of <br />the monolith data with the human subject data indi- <br />cates that the analysis used in estimating human in- <br />stability in flood flows underestimates the human tol- <br />erance as much as 60 to 1,20 percent. <br /> <br />Experimental Bias <br /> <br />The experiments reported herein were conducted <br />under controlled laboratory conditions to isolate and <br />test the variables affecting subject stability in flood <br />flows. The experimental procedures and constraints <br />may reflect bias that do not fully reflect survival in <br />flood flow, Project bias and constraints include: <br /> <br />a. Subjects appeared to be influenced by the pres- <br />ence of safety equipment. Subjects tended to <br /> <br />WATER RESOURCES BULLETIN <br /> <br />take risks in maneuvering that might not nor- <br />mally be taken without safety equipment. <br /> <br />b. Subjects become experienced and learned to ma- <br />neuver in the flow with time. Therefore, <br />Equation 8 may reflect an experienced subject. <br /> <br />c. Subjects were exposed to 2 to 4 tests in a two- <br />hour testing session. In some cases, the results <br />may reflect fatiguing of the subject. <br /> <br />d Subjects were only exposed to flood flows under <br />good lighting conditions. Debris flows and poor <br />lighting conditions were not tested. <br /> <br />e. Subjects did not carry any additional loads dur- <br />ing any of the tests. <br /> <br />f. All tests were conducted with water tempera- <br />tures of680F to 780F. <br /> <br />g. Subjects ranged in age from 19 to 54 years of <br />age. All subjects were in good health. <br /> <br />The constraints limit the application of these test re- <br />sults at this time. ,However, expansion ofthe data base <br />and elimination of these constraints will provide flood <br /> <br />888 <br />
