The Council promotes deliberate
consideration of rnultihazard risk reduction in all efforts that affect the planning, design, construction, and
operation of the built environment. The MMC serves as a focal point for the dissemination of credible
information and sage counsel on major policy issues involving multihazard risk mitigation.

Scope
The MMC's interests are broad'and diverse. They reflect the concerns and responsibilities of all
public/private entities involved with buildings, nonbuilding structures, lifeline facilities, and the hazards
that affect them.

Activities
The MMC's activities are structured to explicitly consider and assess the social, technical, administrative, _
political, legal and economic implications of hazard risks, losses, and mitigation measures. To date the .
MMC's activities funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have included its
organizational activities as well as the conduct ofa broad peer review of the FEMA-developed National
Pre-disaster Mitigation Plan. Exploration of pre-disaster mitigation planning strategies to help states and
communities develop appropriate and effective mitigation plans is a continuing effort. The MMC is
handling the administration of the first year of a mitigation fellowship program for graduate students
studying urban/regional planning; Mechanisms to identify, collect, and document potential mitigation
success stories have been established. The Council is conducting a problem identification effort associated
with optimizing the role of code enforcement officials in multihazard risk mitigation and emergency
response and recovery.

Membership
Full voting membership in the MMC is open to organizations and government agencies with an interest in
or involvement with hazard-related matters and management. Affiliate membership is open to any
individual or entity desiring notification of MMC activities and meetings and wishing to participate in the
MMC's business as well as receive information supplied by the Council to its members. Each
organizational Council member designates a representative and an alternate authorized to act on behalf of
the organization. Affiliate members that are organizations also designate a representative to serve as the
point of contact between the MMC and the organization.

Remember...
Funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the MMC has the access, knowledge, expertise,
and leadership necessary to coordinate all aspects of hazard mitigation.

e

To apply for membership, contact us at the address on top of the page for an application.

,,~ -i.--,
