<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />The South Platte Headwaters and Uppcr South Plattt' basins contain the follov.:ing main <br />channels which drain watr.:r northward from Teller County (listed from west to cast): <br />Turkey Creck. Trail Creek. Horse Creck. and Trout Creck. The most significant <br />waterway draining south to the Arkansas Riycr in the southwestern portion of Teller <br />Coumy (the area impacted by the llooding) is Fourmile Credo <br /> <br />A more recent factor in considering Teller County's location and watershed description is <br />the presence of the bum scar in the northwest comer of the count~ left by the Hayman <br />lire (see Figun: 1.6 on pre....ious pag\.') of 2002. Roughly 50 square miks of northwestern <br />Teller County \"ere alTccted by the tires. The first <br />storm occurred on Friday. July 16. 1004 and lasted through the weekend. The second <br />wave of storms occurred the following week on Ju]y 11-14. capped off by a third storm <br />that occurred July 18th into the 30th. <br /> <br />According 10 the National Climatic Data Ccnter's NEXRAD radar images. a large front <br />of sen~'re storm activity formed in the mountains on Ju]y 16 and moved slowly east. This <br />first storm front pushed into Teller County at approximately 1:00 p.m. and continued 10 <br />drop precipitation in the: area until midnight on the 16th. This pattern of con\'ectiw <br />storm activit~ dew]oped again the following day about ] :00 p.m. and lingcred until 9:00 <br />p.m. Saturday cvening.
