Teller County. Colorado

Introduction

In the aftermath of the 2001 I-layman
\\ildlire. there has been heightened interest
in documenting Hood c'"cnts thai occur in
the general vicinity ofihe bum. Recently. in
July of 200.... widespread Hooding occurred
in Teller County with some of the- most
severe damage taking place \\ithin the
Hayman hum area.

Beginning on Friday. July 16. ~()04. a large.
slow moving storm front moved into the
region producing signilicant amounts of pn:cipilation across Teller and neighboring
counties. Between 3 and 5 inches of rain fell over the next thn:c- days causing dam
breaches. roadway erosion and road washouts. Additional heavy rains and hail fell the
following wcd. worsening existing damage and hampering repair efforts.

No injuries or deaths wcre reportc-d from these e\l'nts. llowe\Cf. many sulfered phone
and power outages in addition to limited mobility and access tn their homes due to road
washouts and closures. Also. the County Sherilrs Ollice was struck by lightning.

Flooded Area I>escription

Teller County is home to approximatd~
20.000 people and c-ncompasses 560 square
miles of rural. mountainous terrain. ~lost of
the flooding in July ~004 alTected dams and
wadways within the county. In light of Teller
County's smaller infrastructure. countywide
damage caused by the July ~004 flooding was
severe and eXh:nsiw.

The most se\ere !lood danlage from the Jul~
swmlS occurred in the northwest portion of
Teller County which is the area de\'astated by
