Colorado <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />In the aftermath of the 2001 I-layman <br />\\ildlire. there has been heightened interest <br />in documenting Hood c'"cnts thai occur in <br />the general vicinity ofihe bum. July 16. ~()04. a large. <br />slow moving storm front moved into the <br />region producing signilicant amounts of pn:cipilation across Teller and neighboring <br />counties. Between 3 and 5 inches of rain fell over the next thn:c- days causing dam <br />breaches. roadway erosion and road washouts. Additional heavy rains and hail fell the <br />following wcd. worsening existing damage and hampering repair efforts. <br /> <br />No injuries or deaths wcre reportc-d from these e\l'nts. llowe\Cf. many sulfered phone <br />and power outages in addition to limited mobility and access tn their homes due to road <br />washouts and closures. Also. the County Sherilrs Ollice was struck by lightning. <br />dismpting el11ergenc~ communications and jail control systems on July 16. <br /> <br />Flooded Area I>escription <br /> <br />Teller County is home to approximatd~ <br />20.000 people and c-ncompasses 560 square <br />miles of rural. mountainous terrain. ~lost of <br />the flooding in July ~004 alTected dams and <br />wadways within the county. In light of Teller <br />County's smaller infrastructure. countywide <br />damage caused by the July ~004 flooding was <br />severe and eXh:nsiw. <br /> <br />The most se\ere !lood danlage from the Jul~ <br />swmlS occurred in the northwest portion of <br />Teller County which is the area de\'astated by <br />the Hayman tire.
