The storm
began during the afternoon of May 30 and continued into the night of May 31, just east of the
front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, This storm followed a general northeasterly direction
across the headwaters of the Republican River, During the afternoon, local residents measured as
much as 20 in (including some hail) in stock tanks and other improvised rain gauges, In Nebraska
and Kansas, the flood volumes were augmented by additional rains during the next 2 days, One
of the largest unit discharges recorded was for the South Fork of the Republican River near Hale,
Colorado [35], A peak discharge of 103,000 ft3/S from a contributing area of 1,612 mi' was
reported,

In 1983, the USBR prepared a revised PMP study for Bonny Dam located on the Republican River
in eastern Colorado, near the site of the 1 935 flood measurements [36], The PMP for this revised
flood study was derived from HMR 51-52 procedures [3, 4], Nine subbasins were used in the

43
