State of Wyoming 1268-DR-WY
Hazard Mitigation Survey Team Report

Use new design standards for replacement poles and structures.

Through-bore poles at the ground line before initial treatment to
increase their life expectancy and lessen strength degradation.

Use braced, laminated or fiberglass crossarms. Since these are
engineered members, the strength is a known quantity unlike solid-
sawn crossarms.

Add X-braces to H-frame structures to increase their strength if not
already existing.

Shorten conductor spans between structures.

Design power structures for heavier snow, ice, and wind loads.
This recommendation could be very effective in areas of recurring
localized damage.

Increase Conductor Strength and Life

Use anti-galloping devices on the lines to reduce damage caused
by wind induced galloping.

Use stronger conductors in the system to provide greater line
strength. Because this could cause structures to fail, this item
should be combined with other measures that increase strength in
the entire system design.

Add vibration dampers for minimizing the effects of strong winds.
Vibration dampers can protect the conductor from long term
damage.

Increase conductor separation on poles or structures to reduce
conductor contact during galloping oscillations.

LEAD AGENCY:

Rural Electric Associations (REA)

PARTNER AGENCY:

Department of Energy's Western Area Power Administration
(WAPA)

TIME FRAME:

Incorporate into current maintenance and new design schedules.

FUNDING:

Use existing budgets to establish an emergency fund
FEMA (HMGP)

11
