No. 6143J002
Project: Portland Flume Reconstruction

existing alignment at these locations. Based on this informa-
tion, it does not appear that temporary support will be re-
quired for either of these structures due to their distance
from the proposed alignment.

3. Temporary support and permanent underpinning systems
must be designed and constructed such that an existing
structure will undergo less than 1/4 inch of total
differential settlement during construction.

End-Product Specifications: The following items relating to
temporary support and/or permanent underpinning systems are
offered for possible addition to the project documents:

1. It is anticipated that all structures indicated
will require some type of foundation support during
construction. Some of these structures will require
permanent underpinning as determined by the engineer
during construction.

2. The contractor will submit a design for a temporary
support and/or permanent underpinning system for each
indicated structure for review and possible modifica-
tion by the engineer prior to construction.

Limitations: The recommendations presented in this report are
based on the assumption that the soil conditions do not deviate
appreciably from those disclosed by the test pits. If any var-
iations are encountered during construction or if plans change,
the geotechnical engineer should be notified so that supple-
mental recommendations may be made if required.

-12-
