No. 6143J002
Project: Portland Flume Reconstruction

Structure No. 9P -( Sta. 2 + 65): This structure is a wood
frame, two story addition to the church building covered with
wood siding. The sructure is in good condition and no evidenc2
of structural distress was noted. The addition rests upon a
shallow concrete spread footing with concrete stem walls. The
building does not have a basement, and appears to have a sus-
pended wood floor. The north wall footing is approximately 13
feet from the existing flume wall.

Structure No. lOP - (Sta. I + 95) ~nd Structure No. lIP - (Sta.
I + 50): Both of these structures are two story wood frame
buildings presently being utilized for building materials stor-
age. Both structures are resting on isolated concrete pads
setting on or just below the ground surface. Both buildings
have suspended wooden floors with the floor joists supported by
unmortered masonry block column stem walls. Structure No. lOP
is apsproximately 7 feet from the existing flume, and Structure
No. lIP is approximately 3 feet from the existing flume.

Temporary Support: It appears that several structures on both
the Cascade and Portland Flumes will require some temporary
support during construction. Due to the age and condition of
some of the structures, it may be necessary to provide perma-
nent underpinning systems in some cases. Both temporary and
permanent shoring/underpinning can be provided in numerous
ways. Some of the more common methods for vertical support
are: isolated concrete pads placed in pits hand dug under the
existing foundation; pretest piles placed in the same manner
and jacked against the existing foundation; inclined vertical
bracing notched into the existing footing and bearing outside
of the structure; needle (carrier) beams extending through the
structure and supported on both ends by wood cribbing, drilled
elements, or concrete pads; battered, concrete filled drilled

-9-
