MJst of thf' floodpl ain
from Federal to Sheridan north of 1-76, is a potential fill area.

channel have not been approved by Adans County or the Urban Drainage and
Flood Control District at the time this report was being prepared. There are
nunerous existing and potential problem areas located in the floodpl ain
within this study segment, incl uding: commercial and residential structures;
five proposed and potential fill areas: the proposed 1-76 service roads
serving floodplain lands; inadequate bridge crossing of the Denver and Rio
Grande Western Ra il road; commerci al and industri al structures located within
the floodplain at Federal Boulevard; and overtopping of Federal Boulevard and
Pecos Street by more than 18 inches dur.ing the 100-year flood.

Numerous problem areas located in the floodpl ain exist within study segment
lIB, including: residential, commercial and industrial structures; t\\O
mobile home parks (one located west of Tennyson Street, and the other west of
Sheridan Boulevard); proposed and potential landfill sites; the proposed 1-76
service roads serving floOdplain lands; and overtopping of Lowell Boulevard,
Tennyson Street and Wads\\Orth Boulevard by more than 18 inches, and Sheridan
Boulevard by less than 18 inches during the 100-year flood. The construction
of the 1-76 channel improvements will increase the 100-year flood discharge
along the main channel south of 1-76 at the Tennyson St. and Lowell Blvd.
bridge structures and will raise the 100-year water surface elevation above
the existing 100-year flood level by approximately 1 foot immediately
upstrean of Tennyson St. and approximately 3 feet immediately upstrean of
Lowell Blvd unless improvements are provided at these t\\O crossings.

STUDY REACH I (CONFLUENCE WITH THE PLATTE RIVER TO HURON STREET)
STA 0+00 to 153+00

STUDY REACH IIA (HURON STREET TO 1,400 FEET UPSTREAM OF THE DENVER & RIO
GRANDE WESTERN RAILROAD) STA 153+00 to 272+30

Study Reach I consists of a 2.9 mile segment of lower Clear Creek from the
confl uence with the South Pl atte River, upstream to Huron Street, located
entirely within Adans County. The Creek is situated between Colorado Highway
224 and Interstate 76 from the Pl atte confl uence to 1-25. The Creek is
crossed by York, Washington, 1-25 and Broadway.

Study Reach IIA consists of an approximate 2.3 mile segment of Clear Creek
from Huron Street to 1,400 feet upstre<Yl1 of the Denver & Ri 0 Grande Western
Railroad, located within Adans County. In this segment, the Creek is crossed
by Pecos Street, the Colorado & Southern Railroad, Federal Boulevard, and the
Denver and Ri 0 Grande Western Railroad.

The area from the Pl atte confl uence to 1-25 is characteri zed by vacant flood-
pl ain 1 ands from York Street to Broadway. The Adans County/Cl ear Creek trail
system is constructed from the confl uence west to Broadway. A Browning-
Ferris Industries 1 andfill is located on the south side of the Creek between
Broadway and Huron Streets.

The study area is characterized by a primarily vacant floodpl ain with nuner-
ous potent i al fill areas, inadequate bridge structures, a broad shall ow
floodplain (averaging almost 1/2 mile in width), and commercial/industrial
structures at Federal Boulevard. The floodplain presently consists of old
gravel quarry operations, with pressure to fill and "reclaim" the floodpl ain
by the private 1 andowners. Brannan Sand and Gravel Company has pl ans for
construction of a channel in conjunction with "reclaiming" part of the flood-
plain from a point approximately 600 feet downstream of Federal Boulevard
east to the Colorado and Southern Railroad bridge. Brannan's plans for the

Floodplain problems in this segment include the overtopping of Colorado 224
at the Pl atte confl uence, and the overtopping of Broadway by less than 6 in-
ches during the 100-year flood. Brannan Sand and Gravel Company has channel-
i zed Cl ear Creek from York Street to 400 feet west of the confl uence wi th the
Pl atte River. Until the existing earthen constriction downstream of the
Brannan channel is removed, Colorado 224 will be overtopped during the 100
year flood.
