<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />CHAPTER 1 <br /> <br />Deckers, Colorado Floods ofJuly 10th and 2l S\ 2002 <br />Hayman Burn Area / South Platte Basin <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br /> <br />On Wednesday, July 10th and Sunday, July 21", <br />two storms produced significant amounts of <br />rainfall that fell on the Hayman Burn area, or <br />what is formally known as the South Platte <br />Basin. The community of Deckers Colorado, <br />which resides in this area, experienced minor <br />flooding and several mudslides as a result 0 f the <br />storm. According to various sources, as much <br />as 0.6 inches of rain fell on July 10th, and as <br />much as 0.33 inches of precipitation was <br />recorded for the July 22nd event. Most of the <br />reported storm damage was minor with the most severe impact being the closing of South <br />Deckers Road due to a four-foot deep river of mud, water, and debris that crossed the <br />highway during, and after, the July 2l st event. <br /> <br />Figure 1.1 - Douglas County Location in the <br />State of Colorado. <br />Map courtesy of the Colorado Herpetological Society. <br /> <br />Location and Descriotion <br /> <br />Deckers, Colorado is located approximately 32 miles southwest of Denver, at the <br />intersection of State Highway 67 and CR l26 in Douglas County (see Figure 1.3 on the <br />next page). The border between Douglas and Jefferson County lies just to the west of this <br />small community.
