A series of <br />agreements on the use of the High Line service road as a <br />recreational trail has given the canal a new, expanded role in the <br />,life of the me~ropolitan community. <br /> <br />In March 1970 the South Suburban Parks and Recreation <br />District entered into an agreemel1t for use of 18.1 miles of the <br />canal f~r recreational purposes. The same year a similal' . <br />agreement was reached with Aurora for use of 12.4 miles of the <br />canal. In Mar~h 1974 the City of Denver signed up to develop <br /> <br />I <br /> <br /> <br />l <br />I, <br />'I <br />II <br /> <br />.il <br />II <br />.1 <br />I <br />I <br />i <br /> <br />., <br /> <br />13.2 miles of trail. In May 1974 the Colorado Division of Parks <br />and'Outdoor Recreation assumed recreational control or'the first <br />1 S.8 miles of the canal. <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />The High Line Canal, an artificial waterway developed to serve <br />the needs of 19th century agriculture, now stands as a major <br />environmental asset in the rapidly urbanizing 20th century <br />Denver area. ' <br /> <br />. '1 <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />, ~. <br />The Colorado St.lle Forest Service has completed a study of <br />the canal vegetation and is working with the Denver Water' <br />Board on a long range management plan to maintain the canal's <br />verdure.
