<br />ISSUE: <br /> <br />EC-6 Lack of natural hazard awareness and education in K-12 Schools <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br /> <br />Education can mitigate loss of lives, and property. The existing in-school pro- <br />grams do not adequately address natural hazard awareness/preparedness <br />which has resulted in a lack of knowledge on how to prepare for disaster events. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATIONS: <br /> <br />Develop and implement a disaster education program, which expands on <br />current fire safety programs in schools K-12. Program will include: <br /> <br />. Presentations by fire authority, meteorologists and media that <br />informs school age children on the danger of natural hazards <br />. Distribution of brochures with hazard information, family disas- <br />ter plans, and emergency phone numbers needed in the time of <br />disasters <br /> <br />LEAD AGENCIES: <br /> <br />Colorado Association of School Boards, local school districts <br /> <br />FUNDING: <br /> <br />FEMA, Americon Red Cross, Colorado OEM <br /> <br />SCHEDULE: <br />1998-99 school year <br /> <br />HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT <br /> <br />ISSUE: <br /> <br />HE-) Flooding of sewers, septic systems, and private wells in northeastern and <br />southeastern Colorado <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br /> <br />In northeastern and southeastern Colorado, during storm and runoff periods, <br />many sewers, septic systems and private wells are flooded. Farms that rely com- <br />pletely on private wells may require outside water sources. <br />
