e

e

-URS

~~R~~S"_,

Client:

Denver Water

Location: Colorado
Services: Sediment Dredging and Transport

Project Background

URS conducted studies for estimating the long-term sediment delivery into
the Strontia Springs Reservoir and analyzing the least-cost methods for
trapping and removing the sediments entering the reservoir. The Strontia
Springs Reservoir serves as the intake for the Denver and Aurora water
supplies from the South Platte River and is a vital link in supplying water to
the Denver Metro area. Forest fires devastated the upstream watershed,
which in turn, increased the sediment supply into the reservoir. Denver
Water was faced with protecting their water supplies from excessive
depletion of storage. URS analyzed several methods for trapping and
removing the sediment from the watershed. The least-cost option involved
purchasing a dredge and designing a 7 -mile long HDPE pipeline to carry the
slurry from the reservoir to areas where the slurry could be deposited. It is
anticipated that the deposited sediments can be sold for construction
material.
