<br />I. Utilize a spark arrester on the chimney. <br /> <br />/----~ <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />j. Place screens on foundation and vent eaves. <br /> <br />k. Post name/address signs which are clearly visible from the road. <br /> <br />I. Widen driveway and provide a turn-around space for emergency <br />vehicles. <br /> <br />m. Develop outdoor water supply. <br /> <br />n. Practice a family fire drill and evacuation plan. <br /> <br />o. Make a list of items to take should evacuation be required. <br /> <br />2. When a Fire Occurs <br /> <br />a. DO NOT JEOPARDIZE YOUR LIFE! <br /> <br />b. Prepare to evacuate. Place all valuables in your vehicle, place keys in <br />the ignition, close all windows, and park "heading out". <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />c. Remove combustible items from around your home. (Includes firewood, <br />lawn furniture, hay bales, etc.) <br /> <br />d. Close or cover outside attic, eave, and basement vents, and window <br />shutters (if present). <br /> <br />e. Connect garden hose to outside spigot. Utilize enough hose to reach <br />the entire house, including the roof. <br /> <br />f. Place a ladder against the house opposite the side of the approaching <br />fire. <br /> <br />g. Place a lawn sprinkler on the roof if it is combustible. Do not turn on <br />the water until the fire is very close. <br /> <br />h. Close all windows, chimney dampers, and doors. Leave exterior doors <br />unlocked. <br /> <br />I. Turn on all exterior lights. <br /> <br />J. Shut off gas at the meter/tank. <br /> <br />k. Remove lace, nylon, or "light" material curtains from all windows. <br />Close all venetian blinds and heavy curtains. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />I. Move overstuffed furniture away from all windows and sliding-glass <br />doors. <br /> <br />6 <br />
