,

,

~

INTRODUCTION
The first attempt to layout a town site of 640 acres at Denver

was made in 1858. By 1960, metropolitan Denver had grown in area to

164,000 ac~es of urbanized land. It is anticipated that by the year

2000, urbanized land in metropolitan Denver will total 375,000 acres.

To plan effectively for the future and avoid the hazards of floods,

community planners must have information on flood potentials and areas

subject to flooding. This report summarizes Volume I of the Denver

metropolitan region flood plain information report, which presents

detailed 'information for the South Platte River from Waterton, Colorado,

to Brighton, Colorado. Copies of Volume I, which has been published in a

limited quantity, are on file in the office of the District Engineer,

U. S. Army Engineer District, Omaha, Nebraska; the Inter-County Regional
Planning Commission, Denver; and the Colorado Water Conservation Board,

Denver; and are available for inspection. Flood plain information

regarding tributary streams in the metropolitan area will be published

as the pertinent studies are completed.

DEFINITIONS

;" The flood plain is the area adjacent to the .ormal channel of a

stream which is subject to flooding when stream flow exceeds the capacity

of the chaanel. In terms of risk, the extent of flooding on the plain

varies fro~ the extreme limits of flooding resulting from the maximum

probable stream discharge to be expected, to limits based on flood

stages of frequent occurrence. Thus, while the maximum probable flood

represents a threat of rare occurrence, floods within the range of 5-year

to lOO-year average recurrence frequency represent risks of repeated

~
