<br />POST FLOOD REPORT <br />PlATTE RIVEll AND TRIBUTAHIES <br />NEBRASKA, WYOMING, AND COLORADO <br /> <br />FLOOOO OF MAY -JUNE 19B <br /> <br />I. INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />1. AUTHORITY <br /> <br />This post-flood report has 'be,en pre,nred in conforma.nce <br />wi th the requirements of ER 500-1-.1, "Natural Disaster ActiYi ties. " <br />The report pertains to the flOoding ~rhich occurred during Mi~y and <br />June 1973 throughout the Platte River basin in Nebraska, Wyoming, <br />and Colorado. <br /> <br />A flood emergency for the Oma.ha District was declared on <br />5 May 1973 in accordance with the provisions of the District's <br />Supplement A to ER 500-1-1.. Post-.flood recovery operations were <br />initially undertaken by the Omah~ District under authorit.y of' <br />Public Law 84-99. On 23 May 1973, a 16-count.y area in Colora,do <br />was declared a disaster area, and further recovery missions "ere <br />assigned to the DIstrict by the Office of Emergency Preparedness <br />(OEP)l/ pursuant to the authorit:r of Public Law 91-606. <br /> <br />2. PURPOSE AND SCOPE <br /> <br />a. Purpose. It is the PurlX.se of this report to provide <br />a record of the May-June 1973 flood with respect to the hydro- <br />meteorological data, the areas f1ood,ed, the physical damages <br />inflicted, and the financial and E!Conomic losses sustained. <br />The report also provides a description of the post-flood <br />rec overy opera tiolls ass igned to the Corps of Engineers. <br /> <br />b. Scope. The report presents data on the storm conditions, <br />precipitation, and runoff that causE,d the flooding; the streams <br />. on which flooding occurred, and, the peak flood discharges. <br /> <br />c . Flood damages are summa.r:ized in appropriate major <br />categories such as urban, r1U'8.l, llond transportation. TheSE' <br />major categories ll,re reduced to appropriate subcategories; for <br />example, urban flood damages are :presented in subcategories: of <br />residential, commercial and industrial, utilities, and related <br />items. <br /> <br />l/OEP was redesignated as th.e FE,deral Disaster Assistance <br />Administration ~Iubsequent to this flood event. <br /> <br />1 <br />
