Only <br />one major bridge, the 15th Street bridge, over the South Platte <br />River in Denver, was destroyed. ~lsewhere, however, numerous <br />county and local bridges over tri1lUtary streams were damaged or <br />destroyed. Damage to streets and roads by erosion was severe <br />throughotlt the South Platte River basin. There were also many <br />road clo$ings due to landslides aqd rockslides resulting from <br />excessive rainfall. In t},e North Platte River basin, <br />the major transportation loss was the previously mentioned <br />derailment of a 41-car freight tI'llin of the Union Pacific <br />Railroad. There were also sca ttel'ed reports of secondary road <br />closings due to flooding on tributaries of the North Platte <br />River in Wyoming. There were no l'eports of transportation <br />losses due to flooding along the Platte River in Nebraska. <br /> <br />29. COLLECTION OF FLOOD DAMAGE EBTIMATES <br /> <br />a. Estimates of flood damages presented in this report <br />reflect the effects of flooding along the South Platte River <br />from about Littleton, Colorado, to its mouth, a distance of <br />317 river miles; along the North Platte River from Alcova Dam <br />to its mouth, a distance of about 440 river milell; and along <br />the Platte River from North Platte, Nebraska to Columbus, <br />Nebraska, a distance of about 309 river miles. Of the three <br />rivers, the South Platte River in Colorado registered flood <br />discharges at two gaging stations that exceeded previous <br /> <br />74 <br />
