EXECUTIVE SU~!t1~RY

This report presents a plan to reduce flood damage in the City of

Nontrose. At the present time the culvert crossings on Nontrose Arroyo

are insufficient to pass the lOa-year flow; consequently, during such an

event a considerable amount of flow would be lost from the channel to

flow overland. This shallow flooding would flow away from r~ontrose Arroyo

west and northwest toward the Uncompahgre River, resulting -in average

annua-I damages to residential and commercial areas in the amount of

$198,000. There is also some overflow from Cedar Creek in f'lbntrose due

to insufficient culvert capacity, which causes $24,000 in average annual

damages. The recommended Flood Control Plan consists of -improving ten
cu-Iverts on f'lbntrose Arroyo and one on Cedar Creek. This plan would el imi-

nate structural damage from noods up to th'2 -lOa-year event. The economic

evaluation was completed based on the following criteria: 7 3/8% interest

rate; project life of 50 years;

sis yields benefit-cost ratio~s

Cedar Creek respectively.

and 1980 donar base.
