This flood event, however, was not the direct result of precipitation. <br /> <br />(Reference 2) <br />Flood of August 13, 1964 <br />Heavy rain (1.15 inches in 3.5 hours) on saturated soils in the 1'1ontrose <br />area on Wednesday, August 13, 1964, ca used mi nor damage to agri culture a nd was <br />beyond the capacity of the City storm sewers existing at the time as described <br /> <br />in the following article from the Montrose Dany Press. <br /> <br />AREA HARD HIT BY <br />TOO MUCH RAIN <br /> <br />While the rest of the <br />southwest suffers in the <br />grip of a drought that <br />has cost millions of <br />dollars, the Montrose areS <br />is trying to dry out from <br />one of the wettest seasons <br />in years. <br />Torrents of rain Wednes- <br />day that added more moisture <br />to already rain-soaked areas~~' <br />had farmers speculating <br />losses. <br /> <br />Flood of June 21, 1967 <br /> <br />Storm sewers became <br />clogged creating several <br />"I akes" throughout the <br />town. <br />Official rainfall for <br />WedneSday measured at the <br />Uncompahgre Valley Water <br />Users Association was 1.15 <br />inches--a near record fall. <br /> <br />8-13-64 <br /> <br />A localized thunderstorm on June 21, 1967, dumped over an inch of rain <br /> <br />and hail on the city causing floOding on many streets, notably Uncompahgre <br />Avenue and Main Street. Runoff carried by the streets overtopped curbs and <br /> <br />debris clogged storm sewer inlets.
