WARNING

Flooding can be a dangerous situation. Where flood depths and
velocities can be substantial, life and limb can be threatened.
Keep this in mind as you consider the various methods to deal
with flooding.

This manual is intended to present ideas, not guaranteed solutions,
to protect your house from flood damage. The success of many of
these ideas depends on local soil, the structural condition of
your house, and the type of flooding that will occur.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Water
Resources recommends that before you invest a lot of money you
should consult with an engineer. We strongly recommend this if
you are considering j1oodwalls, elevating your house, dry flood-
proofing, or another method that depends on a man-made structure
to resist the effects of floodwaters.

ii

'"--
