PREFACE

On the average, Illinois residents and businesses suffer over $100
million in flood damages each year. The Illinois Department of
Transportation, Division of Water Resources is working to reduce
these damages but it will be a long time before many properties can
be protected. In the meantime, this manual has been prepared to help
the owner of flood-prone property.

Before you make any decisions on protecting your house you should
have an idea of what type of flooding and flood damages you could
expect. The best source of information on this subject is your city
engineer, building department, planning agency, or other local official.
No one can predict what the next flood will be like. However, from
their experiences and available engineering studies you should be
able to answer these questions:

Is your property in a floodplain?

How much warning will there be before a flood?

How deep can the flood waters get?

Will there be fast currents, ice, or debris?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can select the
appropriate protection ideas that are discussed here. For most of
them, you should consult with the proper contractor or an engineer.

The Division of Water Resources recommends that all property owners
consider a three part protection program that involves:

1. Some preparation measures to protect you from damage from smaller
floods.

2. An evacuation plan to help you during the flood and to remind
you to protect selected uninsurable items.

3. A flood insurance policy keyed to the structural and/or contents
damages that are expected.

Should you have any questions or comments on this manual, please contact
the Division's Bureau of Local Assistance at:

300 North State Street
Room 1010
Chicago, IL 60610

or

2300 South Dirksen Parkway
Room 202
Springfield, IL 62764

----
