<br />Reclame.tion's Role in Flood Control <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation is the primary water developnent <br />agency of the Department of the Interior. The Department has many <br />programs devoted to the p1.anning and conservation of our Nation's <br /> <br />Ntlources. The principal agencies and conservation programs of the <br /> <br />De:partment are as follows: <br /> <br />Bureau of Reclame.tion--irrigationl power. flood control <br />municipal-industrial water supply projects. <br /> <br />Geological Survey--basic data. <br /> <br />Bureau of Land Management) <br />Bureau of Indian Affairs >--soil and moisture conservation. <br /> <br />Fish and Wildlife Service--fisheries and migratory water- <br />fowl conservation. <br /> <br />National Park Service )--recreation interests. <br />Bureau of Outdoor Recreation) <br /> <br />Bureau of Mines--mineral investigations <br /> <br />Bonnevi1.le1 Southwestern, and <br />Southeastern Bower Adm1nistration--~droelectr1c power <br />marketing. <br /> <br />Office of Saline Water--research and desalinization of <br />salt and brackish water. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclame.tion has served the 17 western states <br /> <br />since 1902. By June 30, 1964 the Bureau had cQlllpleted 210 storage <br /> <br />dams and dikes which form reservoirs having a total storage capac- <br />ity of more than 98 million acre-feet. The Bureau was supplying <br /> <br />water to 128.863 irrigated farms containing nearly 7.5 million <br /> <br />acres of irrigated land. It was operating 47 hydroelectriC power- <br />plants having a combined capacity ot nearly 5.8 million kilowatts. <br />The Bureau's reservoirs provided 1.~O,OOO acres of water area, <br />9.497 miles ot shoreline. and 34.700,000 visitor days in 1963. <br /> <br />4 <br />
