The earliest flood for which circumstantial evidence is available

occurred in 1844 when the bottom lands in the vicinity of Denver were

covered with water from bluff to bluff.

Three separate floods occurred in the Denver area in May and June

1864. A cloudburst in the Cherry Creek-Plum Creek Basins on May 19-20

covered the lower portions of Denver with 1 to 5 feet of water, leaving
great deposits of sand and gravel.
Floods occurred in 1867, 1876, 1894. The flood of June 1921 was
the most severe of record to that time. The South Platte River rose

about 7 feet in Denver, doing much damage. September 1933 saw the

highest flood of record in Denver. The second largest flood on the

South Platte River occurred early in June 1935 caused principally by

Kiowa and Bijou Creeks.

Numerous other smaller, although severe, floods have occurred on

many tributaries.

j

2
