acre-feet of water for municipal use for the cities of Pueb&o, Colorado

Springs and other cities in the lower Arkansas Valley. A pipeline system

will deliver the water from Pueblo Reservoir to Arkansas Valley towns.

Had Pueblo Dam and Reservoir been in existence during the 1965

flood on the Fountain and Arkansas Rivers, much of the damage downstream
from the confluence of the Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River would
have been lessened. At the time of the flood the Arkansas River was
near capacity. Had Pueblo Dam been constructed, the river could have

been cut-off, allowing the Fountain Creek flood to enter essentially a

dry-river below the Pueblo area.

The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project was authorized by the Congress

in 1962 and construction of several features are now underway.

Construction of Pueblo Dam and Reservoir is scheduled to begin in September

1968 and completion will be three years later.

19
