PUEBLO DAM AND RESERVOIR

(Fryingpan-Arkansas Project)

This dam and reservoir will be built on the Arkansas River

approximatelY 6 miles west of Pueblo, Colorado, by the Bureau of

Reclamation as a feature of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project currently

under construction.

Disastrous floods have occurred several times in the Pueblo area.

The worst killed at least 78 persons and caused $19,000,000 damage
(1921); the 1965 flood, centered in the Fountain Creek area in the east

portion of Pueblo, caused extensive damage from Pueblo to John Martin

Reservoir, 90 miles downstream. A barrier dam west of Pueblo and a

floodway channel now afford some protection to the western portion of

the city. Flood damage between Pueblo dam site and John Hartin

reservoir is presently estimated at $708,000 annually. The 1965 flood

is believed to have greatly exceeded this figure. Pueblo Reservoir

would eliminate about 66 percent of this damage.

To capture. store and distribute water from the river (flood

control) and to regulate subsequent power releases coming from the

upper reservoirs that are part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project,

the Pueblo Dam and Reservoir is an important part of this project.

Pueblo Dam will be 180 feet high and 10,600 feet long and will impound

approximately 400,000 acre-feet of water--290.000 for conservation,

100,000 for flood control, and 10,000 for dead storage. The reservoir.

at altitude 4902 msl would cover 6,700 acres. Releases will be made

through a powerplant at the dam. Additional benefits besides flood

control of Pueblo Dam and Reservoir inClude storage of about 21,000

18

j
,
