TWO FOEKS DAM AND RESERVOIR
(Upper South Platte Unit)

The Two Forks Dam site is located about a mile downstream fran

the con1'luence of the North Fork and the South Platte River, some

25 airline miles upstream from Denver.

Total storage capacity of the Two Forks Reservoir site can be

as much as 1,200,000 acre-feet Which could amply provide for all

conservation and flood control requirements. Hydrologic studies are

well advanced in the detemination of specific requirements Which

will set the required total capacity.

Only a dam at the Two Forks

site can provide protection for the Denver water works at Kassler.

It would relieve the Chatfield site of nearly all need for the

storage of flood flows originating in the North and South Forks of

the river and could do it at a cheaper cost per unit of capacity.

The Two Forks and Chatfield Reservoirs must be coordinated to pro-

vide optimum multipurpose results.

The Two Forks Reservoir would, of course, also be operated
for flood control as an integral part of the multiple-purpose

developnent of the entire South Platte River :Basin, involving
coordinated operation of the Two Forks-Chatfield-Cherry Creek-

Narrows Reservoirs.

In addition to the main unit of Two Forks Dam and Reservoir,
it is pls.nned to construct the Turkshead Dam and Afterbay. Water

releases fran the Two Forks Reservoir would be routed through a

hydroelectric powerplant and diSCharged into the Turkshead Reservoir

Which would also serve as an af'terbay for the Two Forks powerplant

10
