NAR:aC\{8 DAM AND RESERVOIR
, (Xarrows Unit)

The Narrows Unit, proposed for reauthorization and construe-

tion by the Bureau of Reclamation, comprises the potential Narrows

Dam and Reservoir on the South Platte River about 7 miles upstream

from Fort Morgan, Colorado. The damsite is approXimately 70 air

miles northeast of Denver. The need for a reservoir near the present

site has been recognized locally for more than 50 years.
The Narrows Dam and Reservoir was authorized as a unit of the

comprehensive Missouri River Basin Project by the flood control acts
of 1944 and 1946. Preconstruction activities were initiated in 1947
and a definite plan report was prepared in 1951. Public hearings
were held in 1951 which indicated considerable opposition 'to the

plan--principe.lly by residents located in the reservoir area. As a

result of the lack of official support by the State of Colorado, all

activities on the dam and reservoir were terminated.

During the intervening years, many discuss ions and meetings
of interested groups were held, a Steering Committee was organized,
and the Colorado Water Conservation Board advanced funds to the

Bureau of Reclamation for the resumption of studies. The Bureau

was specifically requested to make a hydrologic study and cost
comparison of the upstream Weld CO\ll1ty site. The studies and dis-
cussions terminated in a meeting of the Colorado Water ConServation

Board in Fort Morgan on September ll-12, 1964. At that meeting, the

recommended Narrows site was officially approved by the Board as the

desired site.

7
