In both riverine (left) <br />and coastal (right) envi- <br />ronments attention should <br />focus on stream channels, <br />drainage patterns, wetlands, <br />and existing vegetation. <br /> <br /> <br />46 <br /> <br />information from the relevant implementing agency <br />or from the Federal Emergency Management Agency <br />(FEMA) can help determine the probability of the con- <br />trol project being implemented and can give an estimate <br />of its expected effects and completion date. <br /> <br />Site Characteristics <br />In addition to hydrologic data, a number of specific site <br />characteristics affect flooding and the choice of strate- <br />gies for flood damage reduction. As with hydrologic <br />data, local planning offices and various federal agencies <br />are primary sources of information on site characteris- <br />tics. In addition to these resources, much of the site <br />analysis depends on site surveys, both visual and techni- <br />cal, by design staff and professional consultants. Relevant <br />site characteristics include the following. <br />Physiographic Features. Physiographic features on <br />the site, such as the location of stream channels or <br />meandering channels, drainage patterns, wetlands, sink- <br />holes, and erosion patterns affect flooding. These natu- <br />ral features should be identified to indicate which areas <br />of the site should be avoided or protected during devel- <br />opment. Such features will affect orientation, distribu- <br />tion, and density of built elements on the site, and will <br />help identify advantages and constraints to be consid- <br />ered in site development.
