<br />- <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />Perennil~ stream - A channellhat has continuous flow. <br /> <br />Pile - An elongated member, usually made of timber, concrete, or steel, that serves as a <br />structmal component of a river-training structUnl. <br /> <br />Piping - The action of water passing through or under a bank and carrying with it to the <br />surface at the downstream toe some of the finer material,. <br /> <br />Point bar - A crescent shaped bar of coarse sediment built Olot from the convex bank of a <br />meander. <br /> <br />Pool - A topographically low area produced by scour anl1 genernlly containing fine- <br />grained sediment~. Pools are usually associated with point bars in <br />meandering streams. <br /> <br />Propagule - Seed, cutting, tuber, bulb, rhiwme, or other vegetative component used to <br />propagate plants. <br /> <br />Quarry-lUll stone - Natmal material used for streambank protection a~ received from a <br />quarry without regarolo gradation requirements. <br /> <br />Rapid drawdown - Lowering the water against a bank more quickly than the bank can <br />drain, which can leave the bank in an unstable condition. <br /> <br />Reach - A portion of a channel between an upstream and downstream point <br /> <br />Recurrence (return) intervlll - The frequency with which a given discharge can be <br />expected. <br /> <br />Refusal - Erosion-resistant material plllJ:ed in a trench (I:xcavated landward) at the <br />upstream end of a revetment to prevent flanking, <br /> <br />Retard - Structure placed parallel to a :;treambank to pR,vent erosive currents from <br />attacking the ballk. <br /> <br />Revetmmt - Cover of erosion..resistant material placed to protect a strr.ambank. <br /> <br />Riffle - Shallow rapids in an open stream, where the water surface is. broken into waves. <br /> <br />Rill erosion - Removal of soil particles from a surface by swrface runoff moving through <br />relatively small channels. <br /> <br />Riparian - Pertaining to anything connected with or adjacent to the banks of a stream. <br /> <br />Riparian vegetation - Vegetation within and along the banks: of a watercourse. <br /> <br />Riprap - Stone or boulders that are placed on streambanlos to protect the bank from <br />erosive waves 01' currents.. <br /> <br />Colorado Erosion COntlrol Manual <br /> <br />XXI <br />
