1-3

plain is designated by the use of new road crossings and some minor
channel modifications. From Taft Street to Parfet:, a grass-l ined
channel will narrow the flood plain where there have been adjacent
housing developments and to intercept the flood waters before they
start spreading out into Wheat Ridge. In final design this channel
can be designed with variable sections ~o blend with any possible
park improvements, thereby approaching a natural flood plain. From
Parfet Street to West 38th Avenue crossing Lena Gulch is planned to
flow through several sections of concrete type channel. The
Red Barn and several other structures have been icentified for re-
moval to allow the construction of a minimal widtt" channel. From
West 38th Avenue to the confluence with Clear Creek a grass-I ined
channel has been selected in a readjusted al ignment which nUlre
closely patterns the historical thalweg. Overall, the selected master
plan would be catagorized as a "soft approach" to flood control efforts.
Had flood plain zoning and management been implemented twenty-five
years ago along Lena Gulch, what is achieved with irrplementation of
their plan for about $4.5 million would be mostly available now at
very I ittle public cost.

PHASE A SYNOPSIS

Phase A of this study defined the problem hydrologically and hydrauli-
cally by field and office studies, to develop all practical alternates,
and to study these alternatives usi,lg a team appf'Oach. An inter.im
report was prepared dated January, 1974.

Field studies of Lena Gulch Basin were made and the entire reach was
wal ked. Hydrological and hydraul ical studies wer'e then prepared to
determine the 10, 25, and 100-year flood magnitudes and floodplains
for present and future land use conditions util izing the storm drain-
age criteria of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. The
following Table I-I presents the 1Ol.1-year flood magnitudes and flood-
plain widths at different locations along Lena Gulch for the existing
channel and for the master plan channel.

The extent of flooding was related 1:0 general First flOCH' levels of
structures. Damages were tabulated according to type of structure and
similarity of levels of flooding for each reach. Table 1-2 presents
a tabulation of damage in each governmental entity,
