NFIP REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS TO ACCEPT
HYDROLOGY AND HYDRAULICS MODEI_S

JOHN L10U
FEMA, REGION VIII

ABSTRACT

Approximately 18,000 communities in the United States participate in the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP). Most of the communities have detailed or limited detailed
floodplain maps which are produced using hydrology or river hydrauliCS computer models.
As we know, there are so many hydrologic orland hydraulic computer models available in
the water resources professional mar1<et. In order to have uniformity of FEMA's maps and
protect the interests and rights of appeal of communities and property owners impacted
by NFIP mapping, there are specific availability and distribution requirements for computer
models used in the preparation of FEMA's floodplain maps and the map revisions. This
presentation will include a discussion of FEMA's model acceptance requirements and the
policies of using some new hydrologic and hydraulic models.

e

e

e
