COLORADO 80203 <br /> <br />~' '[2!' ,j~;-- <br />',~'_ -.I ." ~ . <br />~~~:.J' <br />H.LEP"-O'..lE. <br />130J)e.3~)4I.1 <br /> <br />'DAVIO LEINSDORF <br />.Crested Butte <br /> <br />HERBERT H, VANDEMOER <br />Sterling <br /> <br />February IS, 1978 <br /> <br />Mr. Gene Fisherl Chairman <br />Colorado Land Use Commission <br />1313 Sherman Streetl Room 520 <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />Dear ,Mr. Fisher: <br /> <br />As requested by the Land Use Commission staff the Colorado <br />lvater Conservation Board has analyzed the flood hazard at a new <br />housing development adjacent to the North Fork of the Gunnison <br />River at Paonia in Delta County. <br /> <br />Aerial photographs I detailed topographic maps and field <br />surveyed cross-sections were used in our analysis. <br /> <br /> <br />The 100-year discharge (101000 cfs to 12,000 cfs) for the <br />study site was developed by the Corps of Engineers I Sacramento <br />Districtl as part of an on-going Floodplain Information Study of <br />the North Fork of the Gunnison River between Hotchkiss and Paonia <br />'Reservoir. <br /> <br />Based on our field investigation and the office studies <br />our conclusi6ns are as follows: <br /> <br />a) The site of the housing c1c,v('>lopment vias formerly <br />a low floodplain area adjacent to the river. <br /> <br />b) Gravel berms along the sout~ bank of the river <br />were leveled and the low area was built up with <br />river gravel to about 5 to 8 feet ~bove the <br />bottom of the adjacent river channel. <br /> <br />c) At the time of the field inspectio~ (Nov. 1977) <br />streets and utilities wcrG ill place and several <br />houses (6t) were eomplete~ or under construction. <br />
