Army Corps of Engineers
Sacramento District
650 Capitol Mall
Sacramento, California 95814

Dear Mr. Churnich:

Enclosed are the results and supporting material of
an analysis of the flood hazard on the North Fork Gunnison
River, in the vicinity of Paonia. This investigation was
performed by Mr. Jencsok and Mr. Seaholm of our staff in
February of 1978. The Colorado Land Use Commission had
asked us to make a preliminary determination if a new sub-
division on the left bank just upstream from the county
road bridge was in the lOa-year floodplain.

'.

At the time of the investigation, the lOa-year
discharge was estimated by your staff to be between 10,000
and 12,000 cfs. Therefore, we ran HEC-2 runs for both
extremes to get an indication of the range of water surface
elevations. A local engineering firm was engaged to survey
six cross sections of the channel. For a specific
discharge of 11,300 cfs, we show the subdivision to be
generally in the floodplain I although in some over bank
areas flooding is shallow and the first floor elevation for
at least one structure is above the flood.

This information is being furnished to assist you in
preparing the flood hazard boundary maps of the North Fork
Gunnison River in Delta County.
