Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado

The founders of Matrix Design Group, while
employed at BRW, completed a comprehensive
study for the Air Force Academy by developing
better management tools for the 17 major
drainageways on the site, The project was a pro-
active approach to stormwater and floodplain
management, and developed site-wide floodplain
mapping along with t100dplain management
guidelines for the Academy, The engineering
provided a schedule of work and costs for future
capital improvement projects to protect the
waterways,

n

IJ

o
o

The project provided Academy Managers with the
tools necessary to plan, manage and maintain
development in and around flood-prone drainages
while minimizing negative impacts to the
hydrology, t100dplains and wetlands, This study
also identified areas along the creeks that were
exhibiting excessive erosion or were inadequate
to convey major t100d flows in order to address
broader issues relating to sedimentation, erosion
control, water quality, flood hazard mitigation
and financing,

I]
I~

[]
I]
IJ
IJ
U
o
n

The project study recommended a plan to:
. Develop a standardized approach for
improving channel stability by managing
runoff from off-site basins, thereby
minimizing costs of channel maintenance,
detention, and conveyance facilities,
. Incorporate on,site or regional detention
facilities to control discharges under both
minor and major storm events,
. Promote the preservation of floodplains
and riparian areas, This also establishes
wildlife habitat corridors by maintaining
vegetation in overbank areas.
. Minimize the potential for flood damage
to property by prohibiting construction
and development within the flood way
utilizing a risk-based approach_

-

earn

- -,,--,,--~

,,0

/'

~

rrD1f~ ~
