SITE VISIT AND TRIP REPORT
W ALSENBURG (HUERF ANO COUNTY), COLORADO
OCTOBER 24, 1995

Backl!round
On October 24, 1995 the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) conducted a field visit to
Walsenburg in response to a request by the City of Walsenburg and the Resource Conservation
and Development (RC&D) agency. The purpose of the site visit was to meet with local officials,
to view the floodprone areas in Walsenburg, and to gather information pertinent to potential
rrritigation projects. The meeting attendance is summarized in the table below.

Name Affiliation Phone Number
Larry Lang CWCB (303) 866-3441
Tom Browning CWCB (303) 866-3441
Hank Summers City ofWalsenbun! (719) 738-1048
Don Martin Natural Resource Conservation Service (719)738-1171

Issues and Findinl!s
Several aspects pertaining to the project area in Walsenburg were investigated during the site
visit. The major issues and findings for two distinct projects are described as follows:

Proiect #1

. There is a capacity problem with the existing Number 4 Ditch (Holita Ditch) along Colorado
A venue due to a storm drain that outlets to the ditch on the west end. Flooding along the
ditch may occur during storm events as a result of flow from the storm drain entering into the
ditch. The peak flows at the storm sewer outfall for various recurrence intervals are unknown.

. The storm drain that empties into Holita Ditch was constructed in approximately 1985,
however design drawings and/or backup data for the project are not available at this time.

. Flows in the Holita Ditch drain to the east and pass through a six-foot diameter RCP culvert
under 1-25 to the east of the city. The upper portion of the ditch consists of a 36" diameter
RCP with a slope of about 0.5 to 1.0%. The Holita Ditch has a direct flow (irrigation) of 6
cfs.

. The Holita Ditch does not appear to be maintained regularly, and is characterized by steep
side slopes with heavy vegetation along the banks. This geometry of this ditch is generaljy a
4' bottom width and I H to 1 V side slopes. The average depth is about 3 to 4 feet.

. The city wishes to address the potential flood hazard problems by receiving an
engineering/planning study that would provide the city with guidance for implementation of a
rrritigation project.

1
