<br />PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF WATERFRONT DESIGN <br /> <br />Don Brandes, Principal, Design Studios West, Inc. <br /> <br />>Q~~ ~ AnderSOn~ Executive Director <br />\ Estes Park Ur an Renewal Authority <br /> <br />This paper compares the public process involved in the design and <br />construction of river corridor improvements in Estes Park and The <br />Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project, Pueblo, Colorado. <br /> <br />The public <br />highlighted. <br /> <br />process similarities and differences will <br />The lessons learned from each project are: <br /> <br />be <br /> <br />Estes Park: Master plan the whole big picture which will <br />create a community dream and goal; start the process early to <br />leave time for the dream to grow; emphasize public engagement, <br />not endorsement; have a group (appointed or volunteer) that <br />adopts the design ideas and carries them forth over the years <br />("vision keepers"); and use all types of inter-active methods <br />to obtain public input. <br /> <br />The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project: The consultant acted <br />as facilitator so that a diversity of ideas, programs, and <br />images were entertained; have a diversity of stakeholders; <br />create a "work" force to help implementation ("vision <br />keepers"); have an openness to change and new uses on the part <br />of designers; and travel to observe how river projects work <br />and lessons learned in other communities. <br /> <br />The presentation will stress the lessons learned and how to apply <br />them in your community. <br />
