Attachment #29

SUGGESTED CATEGORY GROUPINGS

The subject headings listed below are the categories under which
the various Hazard Mitigation Team recommendations are grouped.
No category is listed by order of importance and none is meant to
be presented in isolation from the rest.

A. Identification and Regulation: The evaluation of land-use
codes and design and construction standards. It also
involves floodplain mapping and the delimiting of inundation
zones.

B. Minimizing Flood Recurrence: Any flood-lessening measure as
opposed to actions that attempt to accommodate flooding.
Examples include: dam safety and inspection programs;
streambank and channel clearing; slope reductions; and debris
removal.

.

C. Hazard Warning and Education: Includes warning and
evacuation plans and activities such as practice alerts,
public meetings, and lenders' seminars.

D. Structural/Nonstructural Measures: Any approach that
addresses the inevitability of flooding and offers a degree
of physical protection. This involves elevation,
floodproofing and/or conversion of structures, acquisition,
and relocation.
