Day
August 24, 1977
Page 2

removal of the gate.

The conduit sluiceways are eliminated. A 6-foot-wide sluice
chamber with the sill elevation tentatively set at elevation 5998,
rectangular in shape and open at the top, will be provided. A 6 by 4
foot slide gate will control the flow, Stoplog grooves will be pro-
vided. The gate will be motor operated with a pushbutton control
station on the left bank. The sluiceway will be located adjacent
to the penstock inlet. The sluiceway sill is located to provide
about 4 feet of storage for loose boulders which may move in the
stream.

To provide for 3 efs minimum flow downstream from the dam, a
pipe with slide gate control will be provided. No provision is re-
quired for measurement of this flow. The bypass pipe will discharge
into the sluiceway channel. Heating is not anticipated but could
be required as a minor modification if subsequent operation indicated
a need.

Access through the dam to the right bank is eliminated as well
as the access shaft and storage room on the left bank and the valve
room on the right bank. Access to the right bank during normal
operation will be by foot path alon9 the penstoc~ from Idelwilde or
across the crest of the overflow weir. Access to the right bank will
not normally be required since the control of the gates is on the left
bank.

The left bank abutment will consist of a headwall at the end
of the overflow weir and an upstream and downstream wingwall extending
into the embankment sufficiently to provide both bank stability and
to satisfy underseepage requiraments.

A float well will be provided on the left bank to give water
level readings at the power plant. The float well, instrumentation,
pushbutton controls for the gates and gate opening indication (if
required) will be enclosed in a substantial shelter house suitable
for the purpose and approved by the appropriate environmental agency
(rorest Service).

These changes result in a relatively minor loss in power head
which has been evaluated. On the other hand, the design of the dam
is immensely simplified. The cost will be very substantially less
than that of the preliminary design. The backwater effect of large
floods will be greatly reduced. The upstream pool extends almost as
far as before with a reduction of about 10% in surface area and a
reduction in pool capacity of about 50% thus reducing further the
