DATA RESOURCE AGENCY CONTENT FORMAT REFERENCE CONTACT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SHORE AND BEACH EROSION Department of the Army U.S. Army Corps of Engineers The National Shoreline Study, conducted in 1970, reported on the condition of the United States shorelines and pro~ posed means for protecting, restoring, and managing the shoreline to minimize damage from erosion. The study consists of a national summary and 11 supporting documents, mostly for specific regions of the coast. The study found that 20,500 miles are undergoing significant erosion. About two thirds of the eroding shoreline is in private ownership, and thus not eligible for Federal aid under present law. There has been no systematic followup of the national reconnaissance study, although Congress author- ized the Shoreline Erosion Control Demonstration Program, which is now underway. Specific coastal erosion data are available in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District offices. Sources of the data are time-separated photo- graphs, maps by the National Ocean Survey, survey data by the Corps of Engineers, and state data. Printed and graphical.
