A more sophisticated monitoring and modeling
effort is being planned using remote sensing and field
sites. The Palmer Index is used to identify drought areas
for allocation of emergency funding. Analyses are per-
formed by the Department of Agriculture although the basic
date are from the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Data include Palmer
Ground Analyses (Drought Index), monthly (or weekly for
growing season), 1931 to 1978 by substate division.

Computerized tapes and printouts are available at cost of
duplication, $60 per tape, from the National Climatic
Center, NOAA.

Drought BibZiography, Tech.
