<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />1.3 Authorization and Financing <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study was conducted by Black & Veatch Consul- <br />ting Engineers, at the request of the Federal Insurance Administration, <br />U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Deveiopment. The source of <br />authority for the study is the Nationai Flood Insurance Act of 1968, <br />as amended. Authority and financing is contained in Contract No. H- <br />3834 between the contractor and the Federal Insurance Administration. <br /> <br />2.0 <br /> <br />AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the unincorporated areas within <br />Clear Creek County, Colorado. The vicinity maps (Figures I & IA) <br />give the general location on Clear Creek County relative to other <br />cities in the area and the topographic features within the County itself. <br /> <br />Clear Creek County is located on the eastern slope of the Rocky <br />Mountains in north central Colorado. The County is drained by <br />Clear Creek, its tributaries and the upper reaches of Bear Creek. <br />Portions of Clear Creek, the West Fork of Clear Creek, Fal I River, <br />Mi I I Creek, Chicago Creek, Beaver Brook and Quayle Creek were <br />studied in detai I whi Ie portions of Bear Creek, Witter Gulch, Yankee <br />Creek, Clear Creek, the West Fork of Clear Creek, and Bard Creek <br />were studied by the approximate method as agreed between Black & <br />Veatch, the Federal Insurance Administration, and Clear Creek County. <br /> <br />The areas stud i ed were chosen with cons i derat i on given to fore- <br />casted development and proposed construction for the next five <br />years (through June 1981). <br /> <br />2.2 County Description <br /> <br />Clear Creek County encompasses some 394 square mi les of mountainous <br />terrain located about 20 mi les west of the Denver Metropolitan <br />Area. The County boundary on the west coincides for 37 mi les with <br />the Continental Divide. <br /> <br />In 1970, the population of Clear Creek County was 4,780 (Reference <br />3). A steady growth is expected for the County in the foreseeable <br />future. <br /> <br />Clear Creek drains about 285 square mi les, Bear .Creek 86 square <br />mi les, and the North Fork of the South Platte River about 23 <br />square mi les of the mountainous watershed in Ciear Creek County. <br />Watershed elevations range from 14,270 feet atop Gray's Peak at <br />the Continental Divide to about 6,900 feet at the eastern boundary <br />of the County. <br /> <br />5 <br />
